NORTH OF THE BROAD DEMOCRATS CLUB May 24, 2010 TO: ALL POLITICAL CANDIDATES REF: City of Beaufort Unified Development Ordinance Dear Candidate: Recent attention to the issue of political signs has caused the City to review its Political Sign Ordinance. The City of Beaufort's Unified Development Ordinance, Section 7.2.B.7. and 10.1.F stipulates: • Temporary signs, including, but not limited to political campaign signs shall not be posted in the public right-of-way. This restriction includes the posting of temporary signs on trees, utility poles, and other structures with the public rights-of-way. • Political Sign. A sign erected by a political candidate, group or agent thereof for the purpose ofadvertising a candidate or stating a position regarding an issue upon which the voters of the City shall vote. • The Building Official-shall have the authority to remove all signs without notice to the owners thereof, placed in any street or highway right-of-way, signs attached the trees, fence posts, telephone and utility poles, other natural features or signs otherwise prohibited y this article and to impound them for a period of 10 days. • The owner of a sign impounded may recover same upon the payment of $150.00 for each sign, prior to the expiration of the 10 day impoundment period. In the event it is not claimed within 10 days, the Building Official shall have the authority to dispose of such sign. In addition, we ask that no political signs be placed on City Of Beaufort property. We trust this will clarify the City's enforcement policy of this ordinance.
