Beaufort's Donna Williams and her group did a brilliant job pulling together the
August 17 Women for Obama kick-off luncheon at the Country Club of
Hilton Head. |
It was an elegant and
inspirational luncheon
organized in just two weeks. And it drew a capacity crowd of
nearly 250 attendees. With women as organized and effective as
Donna and her team working so hard for Barack, how can our candidate not win?
I'd never seen Jasmine Guy before, but her comedic talent clearly
explains her success on A Different World. This was her debut as a spokesperson
for a politician. But, she said, meeting Barack so inspired her, that she felt she
had to do more than just throw money at his campaign. Jasmine talked about the real
issues women face everyday in a talk that was low key, light-hearted and often laced
with humor and irony. Much of her humor had very serious undertones. Guy cited several
of the Bush II administration's embarrassing moments. With every shoe that dropped,
she thought "Wow, heads are going to roll. But, NOTHING HAPPENED!!!. Katrina, Rove,
Gonzales. NOTHING happened. NO ACCOUNTABILITY. Barack believes in accountability.
You won't hear excuses or see cover-ups when he's in the White House, she said. There was no humor when she talked about the balancing act that women in our
society deal with every day. Or how out of balance things often become. Barack sees
this, understands it, and has practical ideas for fixing it. Heads all over the
room - female and male - nodded in agreement.
Three Beaufort County high school
students spoke before Guy. In many ways, the girls stole the show. The first talked
about volunteerism and how much it means to the community. The litany of organizations
she supports put most of us to shame. The second young woman said that ever since
she can remember, Dubya has been running this country (or pretending to do so.)
She needs some fresh air. The third brought down the house when she said it was
important that a US president knows how to talk and give an articulate speech. Dubya
could take lessons from this kid. SAY PRESIDENT OBAMA Donna suggested that we practice
saying President Obama. Might as well get used to it, because it's going to happen.
I met a South Carolina couple, European expats, who are putting together an afternoon
fund-raising cruise for Obama. They were happy to see us Savannahians there and
generously extended an invitation to Obama supporters on this side of the river.
Details on the cruise to follow in a week or so. Good things are happening in South
Carolina.
