| These pictures were taken at the recent Penn Center 1862 Circle Gala held on May 1, 2010 at the Lyceum on Parris Island. Penn Center, located on St. Helena Island in the South Carolina Sea Islands, is recognized as one of the nation's oldest and most significant African American cultural and historic institutions. Founded in 1862 by Laura Towne and Ellen Murray, northern abolitionists and missionaries, Penn was one of the first academic schools for African Americans newly freed from slavery. The 1862 Circle recognizes leaders who embody the spirit of Penn Center and who serve as national advocates for the enduring history and culture of the Sea Islands. These photos show some of the Beaufort Democrats who attended this important event. |
