Wilson Cosponsors Bill To Cut Jobs

Joe Wilson proudly told the world yesterday on Twitter and his Congressional website that he was cosponsoring H.R. 1277, a bill that sought to cut more than 180,000 jobs this summer.  A proposed cut to the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Emergency Contingency Fund, the bill would, according to the Center for American Progress, leave states without a way to place 180,000 unemployed workers in jobs by the end of the summer.  TANFE had been targeted by Congressional Republicans in a program called "youcut", in which they asked supporters to select a program to propose cutting from the federal budget.

Wilson, who disingenuously referred to the program as "welfare" in his release, seemed disappointed to learn that he and the Republican base had failed to add to his long record of sending Second District jobs overseas, saying on twitter that Congressional Democrats had "failed to see need to save $$$$".  When asked for comment, South Carolina Executive Director Jay Parmley was succinct:  "He's so focused on being a celebrity that he's not even trying to represent South Carolina anymore.  I can't wait to beat that guy and get our economy back on track."

SC Dems Challenge DeMint:  Where Else Do You Stand With Paul?

Endorsee claims President "un-American", doesn't support Americans with Disabilities Act, Federal Drug Enforcement, Israel, Department of Agriculture

South Carolina Democrats continued pressuring Senator Jim DeMint over his support for embattled Tea Partier Rand Paul, who this morning called President Obama "un-American".  Paul was forced yesterday to backtrack his criticisms of the 1964 Civil Rights Act after a national outcry. "Mr. Paul and his radical views are almost entirely a creation of Jim DeMint," said South Carolina Democratic Party Chair Carol Fowler.  "By endorsing him, Mr. DeMint has endorsed Mr. Paul's views and behavior, and we must know what, if anything, he differs with him on.  Does Senator DeMint believe the President is un-American?  Does he favor abolishing the federal government's role in drug enforcement?  Does he believe in the Department of Education and Department of Agriculture?  Does he support Israel?  Or believe that the Second Amendment ensures citizens have the right to violent revolution?  If he wasn't aware of Mr. Paul's stances on the issues, then why on earth would he endorse him for the United States Senate?"

In addition to his failure to support the Civil Rights Act, Paul has come out in favor of abolishing the Federal Reserve, the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Education, and the involvement of the federal government in drug enforcement.  Additionally, Paul has been noncommittal in his statements on Israel, and recently refused to say if he believed that the Second Amendment gave citizens the right to overthrow their government.

"Jim DeMint either vetted this guy and decided he didn't care that he holds views that are so far outside of the mainstream that he needs a tinfoil hat," said SCDP Executive Director Jay Parmley "or he didn't bother to ask.  Either way he's done the people of South Carolina a disservice, and exposed his naked ambition and the price he's willing to pay to get what he wants."

Wilson Flip-Flops On VAT Tax When Base Is Looking

Congressman Supports Tax, Then Calls It Job Killer

Joe Wilson thought he was just talking to his base yesterday when he took to facebook to promote signing a letter that called the VAT tax a job killer.  Unfortunately for Joe, the internet never forgets:  just this year he co-sponsored HR 2927, a VAT proposal that The Hill said would result in a tax "being levied at each stage of production".

South Carolina Democratic Party Chair Carol Fowler said the flip-flop raised questions about Wilson's willingness to be honest with constituents.  "Part of leadership is standing up for what you believe in, not running with the political winds.  If Joe Wilson supports imposing a new tax on South Carolinians, he ought to explain himself, not run for the hills once he gets caught."

SC  Keeps First in the South Primary Status

Columbia, SC - The Rules and ByLaws Committee of the Democratic National Committee today took the first step toward setting the 2012 presidential nominating calendar, and as part of their work protected South Carolina's "first in the South" Democratic Primary.

"For Democrats in South Carolina, this is recognition of the positive role we played in the nominating process in 2008. We were determined to persuade the committee that we should be allowed to retain our position as the first primary in the South and we have done that," said South Carolina Democratic Party Chair Carol Fowler, a member of the Rules and Bylaws Committee.

The DNC's Rules and Bylaws Committee voted to allow states to hold primaries and caucuses no earlier than the first Tuesday in March, with only Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada allowed to hold their primaries and caucuses in February.

The full DNC will vote on the 2012 rules in August. The Rules and Bylaws Committee will meet again before then but is not expected to revisit the issue of early primaries.
