A message from David Rice, President – Democratic Club South of the Broad,

Welcome fellow Democrats and those of you interested in our South of the Broad Club!  We are pleased that you are visiting our website.  The Club is an organization of some 500 active Democrats in Hilton Head, Bluffton and nearby locales south of the Broad River.  Along with the Sun City Club and North of the Broad Club, we are a part of the Beaufort County Democratic Party.  We are excited about the Democratic Party's overwhelming victory in the 2008 presidential election and will be actively promoting the Democratic agenda in 2009.  If you want to join us and help in this endeavor or need more information about the Club or any of our activities, feel free to contact me or any of our officers at the phone numbers or e-mail addresses on this page.  I look forward to meeting you and working with you to achieve the Democratic vision.   Also, on this website you will find our 2009 Membership application which you can print out and mail in to become a member of this exciting organization.

Sincerely, Dave

Each month, except during the summer, we host a membership meeting on the second Tuesday, also in the Community Room of Palmetto Electric Cooperative, 111 Matthews Drive, Hilton Head Island 29926.  Our meetings start at 7:30pm and end around 9pm with a social event starting at 7pm. We strive for exciting programs focused on Democratic issues and programs and invite you to attend and participate.

2010 Membership Drive

Fellow Democrats,

What an exciting time this is to be a Democrat!  I am asking you to join the Democratic Club of Beaufort County South of the Broad for 2010.  We intend to continue being an informed, energetic Democratic presence in Beaufort County.

2008 was a great year for Democrats.  Obviously, the election of Barack Obama on November 4th was the highlight, but there was much more to celebrate.  You made our Club a force in our community.

  • You may be one of the more than 300 people who packed our office on Matthews Drive as it opened on September 7.

  • You may be one of the 100s of people who made calls, greeted visitors to our office, walked neighborhoods or worked at polls.

  • You may have helped David White to register 100s of new voters.

  • You may have helped Blaine Lotz in his primary campaign in the 2nd Congressional District.

  • You may have campaigned with Kent Fletcher for the Senate seat in South Carolina’s 46th District.

  • You may have celebrated Barack Obama’s victory with a large crowd at De Gullah Garden on Hilton Head.

We have much to do.  We need your support and participation. Please sign up!

Sincerely,

David Rice, President

Democratic Club of Beaufort County South of the Broad

More than 350 people joined the SOB to celebrate the opening of our new offfice.  It was so packed that people spilled out of the building. Children from Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Achievement School and singers from the Voices of El Shaddai contributed in sound and tone! Notably,  205 voters pledged their support for Obama that day!

Fellow Democrats – Saturday afternoon (9/12/09) about 50 Democratic supporters (including Sue and me) from around the County met in front of Representative Wilson’s Beaufort office on Port Republic Street to protest Wilson’s un-American conduct during President Obama’s address to Congress.  This was a peaceful but lively event and was pulled together entirely through emails and telephone calls as so many of us were outraged by Wilson’s crude behavior.  You'll be pleased to know that we outnumbered the Republican counter-demonstrators by about 8 to 1.  We chanted “Joe must go” and “No more Joe” at the opposition. A fair number of media and press representatives were there and this demonstration has been reported by the Island Packet/Beaufort Gazette, and, I've been told that I was seen on the evening news waving my sign. After about an hour, we ended by singing “God Bless America” and then stuffed our signs in Wilson’s office door mail box slot as a Monday morning reminder that there are many of us in Beaufort County who are appalled by his behavior.

As a next step we ask that you take on at least one of these action measures:

  1. Send a personal letter to the editor to the Island Packet or Beaufort Gazette stating that Wilson’s behavior is unacceptable and that we expect much more from our Congressional representatives.
  2. Call, write or fax a letter to Wilson’s Washington, DC office (Tel 202-225-2452; Fax 202-225-2455) or his Beaufort office (Tel 843-521-2530; Fax 843-521-2535) with the same message that his conduct is reprehensible.
  3. Make a contribution to Rob Miller’s campaign who will be the Democratic candidate opposing Wilson in the 2010 election and here is a hyperlink to his web site: Click here: Rob Miller for Congress: New Leadership
  4. Attend our Health Care Forum on Saturday, September 26 at 2 PM at Main Street Theater on Hilton Head Island.  This is NOT a political rally but a civil discussion of needed and proposed reforms
Here are a few useful facts about Joe Wilson:
  • As State Senator, Joe Wilson was one of only seven members of the South Carolina Senate who voted to keep the Confederate battle flag flying over the state house in 2000. In April 2000, the Senate voted 36-7 to bring down the flag.
  • Over his entire congressional career, health professionals represent Wilson's top industry contributors, donating a total of $244,196 to his campaign, according to the Center for Responsive Politics OpenSecrets.org database. He received another $86,150 from pharmaceutical companies, $73,050 from insurance companies and $68,000 from hospitals and nursing homes.  Among Wilson's top contributors are the American Hospital Association, a lobby group that represents the interests of hospitals and health networks, and the American Medical Association, which represents physicians.

And here are several photos from Saturday’s rally outside of Wilson’s office,
